Idea Fields Institute

We build research and review that put serious capability and real autonomy in more hands.

Idea Fields Institute takes on cross-disciplinary questions and works them in the open. What it publishes travels with the data and methods behind it, so the work can be checked rather than taken on trust, and put to use rather than just read.

The focus, for now, is machine intelligence and where it meets human life. An independent ethics review board, made affordable for researchers working on their own, is in development and will follow. And whether one person or several stands behind a given piece, all of it meets the same plain standard.

Research and review.

Two strands, one standard. The research runs today; the review board is in development.

  • Research

    IFI Research

Cross-disciplinary inquiry, published in the open with the data and methods alongside it, so anyone can read it and check it. Today the work sits where the human and the digital meet.

  • Ethics review · in development

    IFI Responsibility Board

Independent ethics review, made affordable for researchers working on their own. In development, and built to sit at arm's length from the research it reviews.

Our guiding principles.

Idea Fields exists to keep related work in conversation without forcing it into a single method, discipline, or agenda. Three commitments hold across everything done under its name.

  1. Grounded

Stay accountable to actual people, actual tools, and actual conditions.

The work should survive contact with the world: the people who live a problem, the tools that have to work, and the constraints that refuse to move.

  2. Revisable

Let what you learn change the course of the work.

Plans are instruments, not commitments. When observation and intention disagree, observation wins, and the record shows the correction rather than hiding it.

  3. Open

Show the work, not just the conclusions.

Methods, sources, reasoning, and tradeoffs travel with the output, written so they can actually be read. When people are participants, ethical review precedes the work.
